Got a call on a Sunday morning near Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard. Guy said his Grand Am remote died Friday night and he'd been manually locking and unlocking all weekend waiting for "somebody who actually works Sundays."
I pulled up about twenty minutes later. He was standing next to a white 1999 Grand Am SE, holding the old KOBUT1BT fob with a cracked case and a CR2032 that had a white film of corrosion across the whole positive side. The button pad was worn smooth on the unlock side. He said he'd been mashing it harder and harder for weeks before it finally gave up.
Swapped in a fresh CR2032, but the housing was too far gone. The battery contacts inside were green and the case wouldn't snap tight anymore. Replaced the whole remote shell, transferred the board, confirmed the FCC ID matched, and tested all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic.
Then I stood at the far end of the parking area and tested range. Clean response from about forty feet out, which is normal for these. He locked and unlocked it three or four times from the driver seat like he was making sure it was real.
The whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes. He'd been ready to go to the dealer Monday morning and burn half a day waiting. Didn't need to.
