Got a call from a Venza owner down at Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor in Oxnard. She had one working key left, and the plastic shell on it was split right down the seam. The blade was loose enough to wiggle side to side. She'd been holding it together with a rubber band for weeks.
That cracked housing is a known weak point on the GQ4-29T. Toyota used a single plastic peg to hold the two halves, and once that peg snaps, the blade shifts every time you turn the ignition. Over time it chews up the wafers inside the cylinder.
I checked her ignition first. Wafers were still reading clean, so she caught it early enough. Cut a fresh TOY43 blade on site, programmed the 4D-67 chip through the OBD-II port using seed/password calculation on the immobilizer ECU, which on these first-gen Venzas is the 89990-series module tied to the combination meter. The security timer on an add-key procedure is short, maybe ten seconds, so total programming time was under five minutes.
Then the part she didn't expect. I walked about 40 feet across the parking lot and tested lock, unlock, and trunk from multiple angles. Came back, did three consecutive start-and-shutdown cycles to catch any intermittent fault. She stood there watching like she was waiting for something to go wrong.
Nothing went wrong. She got a second working key out of it too, which means if the old one finally dies, she's not stranded and paying the all-keys-lost rate.
