His 2024 model threw "Key Not Detected" intermittently. Not always. Just enough to make him paranoid about getting stranded. Fresh CR2450 battery didn't fix it. The HYQ14FBX fob looked perfect, no cracks, no water damage.
I connected my scan tool and found stored code B279A in the certification ECU. That's Toyota speak for "the key and car aren't talking right." Could be the fob, could be the car's receiver. Started with the cheaper option: reprogramming the existing fob.
During the relearn sequence, the Venza's system timed out twice. That's when I noticed his phone sitting on the dash, right over the receiver antenna. Moved it to the cupholder and the programming went through clean on the third try.
Turns out some 2024 Venzas get picky about RF interference during key registration. His phone case had one of those magnetic mounts that was just close enough to mess with the signal.
Cleared the codes, cycled all functions, tested from different distances. Everything worked. He saved a nice chunk compared to the dealer diagnostic fee alone, and I added another quirk to my Toyota notes.
