A guy flagged me down in the AutoZone parking lot on Oxnard Boulevard, near Downtown Oxnard. Well, not exactly flagged down. He'd already called a locksmith before he called me, and that first call was the problem.
He'd searched for a locksmith on his phone, clicked one of the sponsored ads, got quoted a low number on the phone. The tech showed up, spent about twenty minutes at the car, and handed him a bill that was nearly ten times the phone quote. The key the guy left him with would start the car sometimes. The remote buttons worked maybe half the time. He had no receipt with a real business name on it, no license number, nothing.
By the time I got there, he'd already looked up California's BSIS licensing system and knew what questions to ask. I gave him my license number on the spot. He pulled it up. Verified. That's how it should go.
I opened the fob right on the hood of his Venza so he could watch the whole thing. The CR1632 inside was the right battery, but the contacts had been bent during the previous visit, probably from someone prying the case wrong. One contact wasn't sitting flush against the cell at all. I straightened it, re-seated the battery properly, and then ran the programming sequence with my diagnostic tool to re-register the fob correctly with the vehicle's security system.
After that I walked every button, tested the handle touch unlock on both front doors, and let him try the start himself. Four for four on the buttons, both door handles responding, clean start every time.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed the job done right the first time. I was already in Downtown Oxnard that morning, so the drive wasn't much. His total with me was a fraction of what that first guy took him for, and this time he had a real receipt and a real license number to go with it.
