Got called out to Oxnard College for a 2022 Venza that wouldn't recognize its only working key. Student was stuck in the parking structure, late for class, holding a dead HYQ14FBX fob against the start button like the manual says.
The backup antenna trick wasn't working. Even with the fob pressed right on the button, nothing. She'd already tried a fresh CR2450 from the campus store. Still dead.
I popped the fob open on my tailgate. The battery was in backward. Simple as that. But flipping it revealed the real issue: corrosion on the positive contact from a previous leak. The green crust was blocking the connection. Cleaned it with a pencil eraser, seated the CR2450 correctly, and tested all four buttons plus the mechanical blade.
Everything came back. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. The Venza fired right up without touching the start button. Range was back to normal too, about 50 feet for the lock response.
She mentioned the dealer quoted her three days wait time for a replacement fob. Would have been way more than what I charged for five minutes of contact cleaning. Sometimes the fix really is that basic.
