A guy near the Ojai Meadows Preserve area had just picked up a 2013 Volvo S60 from an estate sale. Clean car, well maintained, one key. The family handed it over and told him to sort out a spare on his own.
He called the closest Volvo dealer and the quote for a single spare with programming caught him off guard. Then he called me and asked if that number was normal. I told him it was normal for a dealer service department. I do the same job for a fraction of what they wanted because my overhead is a van, not a building.
I met him in Ojai, pulled his working key, and used my programmer to read the transponder data off the existing fob. His S60 runs the KR55WK49266 with a PCF7945 chip on the P3 CEM (Central Electronic Module). I prepped the new chip, cut the blade on my machine, paired the remote through the OBD port, and synced everything in one visit.
Before I left I walked him through something most people don't think about: the difference between add-a-key and all-keys-lost on a Volvo. If you lose every key on a P3, the CEM usually has to come out for bench work, sometimes requiring desoldering the EEPROM. That turns a routine job into a long one. A spare now is the cheapest insurance against that.
He drove off with two working keys for less than the dealer wanted for one.
