2017 Volvo S60
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my 2017 S60 to the dealer to get a replacement key?

No. Volvo dealers will tell you the car needs to be present for programming, and that part is true. But "present" does not mean "at the dealer. I come to wherever the car is. The dealer's requirement is equipment and software access, not a physical service bay. I have the same requirement and I put it in a van that drives to you.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you can cut and program a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I verify the VIN at the car before I start, usually from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker. That VIN confirms the key specs and ties the job back to the documented owner. Same documentation a dealer would ask for.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 S60. Can you just program it, or is there a problem with that?

This comes up a lot. The short answer is: it depends on what you bought. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your specific S60. There are aftermarket fobs floating around that look identical and have the same button count but are not recognized by the vehicle's security system during pairing. Some of them fail partway through enrollment.

Q: My S60 fob works fine for locking and unlocking but the car gives me a key warning on the dash when I try to start it. What is going on?

That split behavior, remote functions working but the start system throwing a warning, usually points to two separate signal paths not failing the same way at the same time. The lock and unlock buttons broadcast a radio signal to the body of the car. The start function works differently; the vehicle reads the fob at close range when it is inside the car, and that read is what the immobilizer is checking.

2017 Volvo S60 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman called me from the Trader Joe's parking lot off Telephone Road in Midtown Ventura. She had her 2017 S60 with her, her registration, and a dealer quote for a spare fob that had made her visibly annoyed. Her neighbor had used me before and handed her my number with a short explanation: "he comes to you."

She had been told by the dealer that the European security architecture on her S60 made it a dealer-only job. That framing is a real thing dealers lean on with Volvo owners, and I get it, because European vehicle security does have a reputation for being involved. But the job itself, registering a new fob into the body control system at the diagnostic port, is work I do at the vehicle.

I pulled up, set up on her hood while she finished her grocery run, and had the fob registered and every button confirmed working by the time she came back out with her cart. Six buttons, all of them. She tested the lock and unlock herself before I packed up.

The dealer quote was the afterthought she brought up on her own when she saw how long it took. I told her to call me if she ever needed a second spare.

Volvo S60 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in Midtown Ventura?▼

Yes. I come to the car. If you are in Midtown Ventura or anywhere in Ventura, I bring the programming equipment and the key blanks with me. You do not need a tow. The all-keys-lost situation on an S60 is more involved than adding a spare when you already have a working fob, but it is still a mobile job.
