I got a call from an architect based out of a small firm near the water in Mussel Shoals. She'd had her 2016 S60 for three years without a spare key and was finally getting around to fixing that, until her primary key started acting up first.
The slot would take the key fine, but the car was throwing a key-not-detected warning randomly at startup. Sometimes it would clear on its own. Sometimes it wouldn't, and she'd have to pull the fob, reseat it, and try again. She'd already ordered a replacement key online thinking she'd just hand it to the dealer.
When I got there, she showed me the fob. The battery contacts inside the slot were slightly green. Not terrible, but enough to cause intermittent reads. I cleaned the slot contacts, swapped in a fresh CR2450, and her original fob started behaving again.
The replacement fob she'd ordered online still needed to be registered to the car. On the S60, adding a key means connecting to the vehicle through the diagnostic port and running the pairing sequence through the security module. I had the equipment in the van. Thirty-some minutes later she had a working spare, registered and tested in every function: slot start, door lock and unlock from the fob, all six buttons confirmed.
She'd gotten a dealer quote before calling me. Parts and programming combined was a number that made her wince. She paid a fraction of that, at her own parking lot, without moving the car once.
