2011 Audi A3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

The key blade itself will last for years if it is cut correctly and the lock cylinder is in decent shape. What kills these early is a bad cut that creates excess wear every time you turn the ignition, or a cylinder that was already worn and chews through a new key faster than it should. We check the cylinder condition when we are on site.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Our work is covered under warranty. On a mechanical key, "stopped working" usually means one of three things: the cut shifted because the key was on a heavy ring and got bent, the lock cylinder wore a bit more and now needs attention, or the key picked up damage. None of those are normal and we will sort out which one it is.

Q: My 2011 A3 ignition feels stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Almost always the cylinder. The 2011 A3 ignition cylinders are known for getting stiff as they age, especially if they have never been lubricated or if the wrong lubricant was used at some point. A dry or gummed-up cylinder will make even a correctly cut key feel like it is fighting you. Some owners push through it for months until the key eventually will not turn at all.

Q: I have a spare key but I have not used it in years. Should I test it before I actually need it?

Yes. Try it in the door lock and the ignition now, not on the side of the road at 6am. A key that has been sitting untouched can feel fine in your hand but bind in a cylinder that has dried out. Thirty seconds today saves a bad morning later.

2011 Audi A3 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A catering company owner called me at 6 in the morning from a commercial kitchen in South Bank. She had a wedding reception to deliver to in four hours. Her 2011 A3 was sitting in the lot and her only key was gone. The delivery vehicle was loaded. She was not going anywhere.

I was there in under 25 minutes. The job was straightforward once I was on site: decode the lock cylinder, cut a replacement key blade to match, and make sure it seated cleanly in both the door and the ignition. The cylinder was a little gummy from years of not being lubricated, which slowed the turn. A little work on that and the new key turned smooth.

She was loaded and pulling out by 6:50. She mentioned the dealer had told her to tow it in and wait. That was not an option she had this morning, and honestly it was never necessary. A mechanical key replacement does not need a dealer bay.

“Marco was the best locksmith I've ever dealt with. I met up with him to have a replacement fob programmed for my mom's car, and he gave me an extremely fair rate and was very pleasant to deal with. Rare qualities for a locksmith. Thanks Marco!”

Audi A3 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Audi vehicles?▼

For the 2011 A3 with a mechanical key, the blank just has to be the right profile to fit the Audi lock cylinder and ignition. We use quality key blanks cut precisely to your vehicle. There is no chip to pair, no frequency to match, so the blank choice comes down to fit and cut accuracy. A sloppy cut on a stiff cylinder will feel wrong from day one and wear the lock faster. We cut clean.
