Got a call just after six in the morning from a catering company owner at a commercial kitchen in Peninsula Park, Oxnard. She had a wedding reception to prep for and her 2011 A3 would not start. Key went into the ignition, turned, and nothing. Dashboard just sat there with the immobilizer light on solid.

First thing I noticed: her switchblade key was beat up. The blade had play in the housing, and when I looked closer the plastic around the transponder cavity was cracked. The ID48 glass chip had shifted just enough inside the shell that the immobilizer ring around the ignition barrel was not reading it consistently. Classic wear issue on these 8P A3 switchblade housings, part number 8P0 837 220 D for the shell.
I transferred the ID48 chip into a fresh housing, cut a new HU66 blade to code on my mobile unit, and tested ignition read five times in a row. Solid every time. The immobilizer light flickered and dropped like it should. Then I used my Lishi HU66 to lubricate and work the door cylinder since she mentioned it had been stiff for months.
She was loaded and heading to the venue before seven. No tow, no dealer wait, no missed gig. Just a worn-out key shell that finally gave up.
