The call came in from a tech startup employee near Seabridge Marketplace in Oxnard. His 2021 A3's smart key had been acting up for weeks, and now it was dead.
He'd already tried the CR2032 swap. Still got "No key detected" on the dash. The emergency blade let him in, but push-start wouldn't recognize the fob at all, not even pressed against the steering column where the backup antenna sits.
I checked the fob first. Battery contacts clean, CR2032 testing at 3.1V. The problem wasn't power. I hooked up my VVDI2 to pull fault codes through the OBD port. Sure enough: B117929 stored in the BCM2, indicating key transponder communication failure.
The fix was a new smart key with part number 8V0959754AM. I cut the HU66 blade on my Condor XC-Mini, then ran the BCM2 programming sequence. The VVDI2 handles the Component Protection removal that Audi builds into these systems. Without that step, the car rejects any aftermarket key.
Twenty minutes later, all functions tested good. Lock, unlock, trunk release, and push-start working from ten feet away. The dealer wanted him to leave the car for three days. I handled it in his apartment parking spot for way less than their quote.
