A shop in the Wilson area of Oxnard called me in on a salvage job.
Another locksmith had attempted an all-keys-lost procedure on a customer's 2017 A3. Somewhere in the middle of the module read, something dropped: power, connection, wrong software revision, nobody was certain. The body control module came back locked. The immobilizer would not respond through the OBD port. The shop's own tech had already spent time on it and hit the same wall. The customer was sitting there watching all of it.
I brought my bench reading setup. When the OBD route is closed off because the module is in a locked state, you go around it: pull the module, read the EEPROM directly from the chip, send that data to the calculation server, get the file back, generate fresh key data, reinstall, and then finish the key learning through OBD with the module back in the car and talking again. It is not fast. It is also the only path forward when the standard route is gone.
The whole job took close to two hours. The 4-button flip key matched the factory fob spec exactly. The car started. The customer drove it out that afternoon.
The dealer option at that point would have been a tow and a multiday wait, with a bill that would have made the original locksmith situation look minor by comparison. I did not bring that up. The car running was the whole point.
