Out near the Camarillo Ranch House, a guy with a 1999 Dodge Caravan flagged me down through a referral. His remote had stopped locking and unlocking, and the panic button was dead. He'd already bought a replacement GQ43VT17T off Amazon, but it just sat there doing nothing after he put the CR2016 in.
He thought the van needed dealer programming. It doesn't. Not for the remote, anyway.
The 1999 Caravan uses a self-learn procedure for the remote. You turn the ignition to Run, hold Lock and Unlock on a working remote within five seconds, and the Body Control Module (BCM) enters program mode. One chime means it's listening. Then you press any button on the new remote and wait for the second chime. Done. But his original remote was dead too, so there was no working remote to start the sequence.
I used my equipment to trigger the BCM's program mode directly, paired his new GQ43VT17T, and tested all three buttons at the van. Locks cycled clean from 15 feet out. Panic hit on the first press.
The whole thing took about 20 minutes, most of that spent popping open his old remote to confirm the board was corroded beyond saving. Water had crept in through a hairline crack in the case. He kept the old one anyway, like a souvenir.
A dealer trip for this would have been half a day minimum for something I handled at his property.
