Got a call from a woman parked near Topa Topa Brewing Company in Oxnard. Her 2003 Dodge Caravan wouldn't turn over. Key went in fine, turned fine, dash lit up, starter cranked, but the engine would catch for about two seconds and die. Classic SKIS rejection. The Sentry Key light on the cluster was flashing, which on these third-gen Caravans means the SKIM module in the column isn't reading the transponder.
She said the key had been through the washing machine the week before. Looked fine on the outside, but that can kill a PCF7935 chip.
I decoded her door lock with my Y159 Lishi, cut a fresh blade, and connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port under the dash. On these 2003 Caravans, the SKIM module communicates with the PCM over the PCI bus, and you pull the PIN through diagnostics. Whole security access process on this platform takes a few minutes once you're connected. Programmed the new 4D64 transponder, and the van started on the first turn and stayed running.
She kept her old key as a door-only spare since the blade still works even if the chip is dead. Smart move.
