Got a call around midnight from a dialysis tech finishing her shift near the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center area in Oxnard. She walked out to the lot and her 2006 Dodge Caravan would crank but not fire. The SKIM light on the cluster was sitting there solid red instead of flashing and going out like it should.
She had already tried her spare key. Same thing. Both keys had stopped communicating with the immobilizer at the same time, which pointed me toward the SKIM module itself rather than the keys.
I got there before 1am. Hooked my Smart Pro to the OBD-II port and pulled the SKIM PIN. The module was still responding to the tool, just not reading transponders. I cut her a new Y160-PT remote head key, programmed the transponder through the diagnostic port, and the SKIM light did what it was supposed to do: flash, then go dark. Engine fired right up.
Tested all six buttons on the remote head, lock, unlock, panic, both sliding doors, and hatch. Everything answered. Then I reprogrammed her original spare too, since the module had dropped it.
She sat in the driver seat with the heat running the whole time. Drove home about 30 minutes after I pulled up. The dealer was closed, and when she had called their service line earlier they told her the next opening was Friday. It was Tuesday.
