2007 Dodge Caravan Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy living over in Sea Air, Oxnard, called me on a Tuesday morning. He drives a 2007 Dodge Caravan and had been nursing one key for months after the second one went missing sometime last winter. Then the last key stopped unlocking the doors remotely. He was still starting the van fine, so he kept putting it off. Then one morning it wouldn't start at all.
He figured it was the battery. Swapped the CR2032 himself. Still nothing on remote, still no start.
When I got there, I tested the fob first. The remote was genuinely dead - no signal, no response on any of the six buttons. But the start failure was the part that needed attention. On these remote head keys, the blade and the fob electronics share the same housing. When the remote side of the key fails hard enough, owners sometimes assume the whole key is gone. What actually matters for starting is whether the transponder inside that head is still readable.
I checked the transponder. It was intact. The issue was isolated to the remote circuit board, which had corroded contacts - not unusual on a key this age, especially near the coast where the salt air in Sea Air does its thing to everything metal and electronic.
I built him a replacement remote head key, programmed it to the van at the curb in front of his place, cut the blade to match the lock, and walked through every button. Doors locked and unlocked, and the van fired up on the first turn.
He mentioned the dealer told him to bring it in for an appointment Thursday, two days out. He needed the van that morning for work. That's usually how it goes - dealer availability and your schedule don't line up, and that gap is exactly where I operate.
