Got a call from Oxnard, over in the Nyeland Acres area. A woman with a 2010 Santa Fe said her spare key had been sitting in a drawer for years and she wanted it set up as her daily driver. Her original was getting beat up, the rubber buttons were cracking, and she figured the spare was free insurance.
She met me outside her sister's place during a birthday party. Kids running around, music going. She asked me straight: would the aftermarket key hold up every day or was it going to fall apart in a month.
I get that question a lot. The answer depends on sourcing. I pulled one of my stocked blanks, same edge-cut profile for the HY18R blade, same PCF7936 ID46 chip inside, same 3-button layout on the remote shell. The circuit board takes the same CR2032. Only difference you can see is no Hyundai logo stamped on the back.
Cut the blade on site, programmed the transponder through the OBD-II port using the PIN read off her immobilizer module (Smartra 2 unit, part number 95400-2J200 on CM-platform Santa Fes). Cloned the remote frequency. Then tested: start, kill, start again, lock, unlock, panic, walk-away range check from about 30 feet.
She clicked it a couple of times herself, looked at the dash, and just nodded. That was it. No drama, no tow, no sitting in a dealer waiting room. A fraction of what they wanted, done in a parking lot while the cake was being cut.
