A guy in RiverPark called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He was in the parking lot of one of the shops off Vineyard Avenue, and his 2014 Santa Fe wouldn't acknowledge the fob at all. No response from the door handles, nothing on the start button. He had tried a fresh battery the night before, so he figured the fob was dead and he needed a new one.
I got there and asked him to hold the fob flat against the start button while pressing it. The car started. That told me the fob itself was alive. The transponder inside was working fine at contact range. What was gone was the radio side of things, the part that talks to the door handles and lets the car see the key from a distance.
I opened the fob on my tailgate. The new CR2032 he had installed was sitting slightly canted. The positive face wasn't making full contact with the clip. One corner of the battery had caught the edge of the tray instead of dropping flat. A half millimeter of tilt was enough to give the fob just enough juice to fire the transponder up close but not enough to run the full radio signal at distance.
Reseated the battery, cleaned the contact points, closed the case.
Walked the doors. Both handles touched and unlocked clean. Start button saw the key from the seat. Ran all four buttons and checked the range across the lot.
He just needed the fob finished properly. No new key, no programming, no trip to the dealer. Done in the parking lot in about fifteen minutes, for a fraction of what a dealer visit would have cost even before they figured out it wasn't a hardware failure.
