2015 Infiniti Q70
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I really have to tow my Q70 to the dealer if I have no working keys?

No. The dealer will tell you to tow it in because that's how their service lane works. It's not the only option. I come to wherever the car is sitting, whether that's a driveway in Hollywood by the Sea or a parking lot somewhere in Oxnard, and handle the whole all-keys-lost process on site. The tow cost alone on top of dealer key pricing makes the math ugly fast.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take on a 2015 Q70?

On the Q70, plan for roughly 45 to 75 minutes on site. That covers security access, PIN extraction, key registration, cutting the emergency blade, and full testing of every button and both door handles. The Nissan intelligent key architecture on this generation is well-documented and the process moves smoothly when the equipment is dialed in. Dealers typically ask you to order the key by VIN, wait for it to arrive, then come back for a separate programming appointment.

Q: My Q70 recognizes the fob sometimes and not others. What's actually going on?

Intermittent key-not-detected on these is almost always one of three things: a battery that reads fine on a static test but drops under load, a contact inside the fob housing that isn't seating the battery consistently, or interference from aftermarket accessories drawing power near the ignition area. The Q70's smart key antenna is reading a signal, and anything that degrades that signal slightly shows up as an intermittent warning before it becomes a full failure.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have someone program it?

Yes, but read the label carefully before you buy. The fob has to match the factory FCC ID on your original. A fob from a different vehicle in the same family may look identical and have the same button count but won't register correctly to your Q70. If the part number doesn't match the dealer part number for your vehicle, you're rolling the dice. Buy the right one and bring it to me, or I can supply it.

2015 Infiniti Q70 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Hollywood by the Sea, I got a call from a guy who described himself as "not a car person, just an Infiniti person."

He'd had his 2015 Q70 for a few years, never touched a fob battery, and one afternoon the dash threw him a key-not-detected warning in the middle of running errands near the waterfront. He ignored it. Then it came back. Then it started taking two or three presses to get a response from the lock button.

By the time he called me, he'd already been to a parts store and picked up a battery. Swapped it himself, thought he fixed it. The warning came back the next morning.

I drove out to him. He met me in the driveway with the fob already in his hand, turning it over like the answer was written on the back.

I opened it up and checked the contact points inside the housing. The battery he'd installed was sitting slightly off-center, and the positive contact had a very subtle bow to it, probably from the original battery sitting in there a long time before it was changed. It wasn't making consistent contact. I straightened the contact, reseated the battery properly, and closed the housing.

Then I did what I always do before I leave: walked through every button, tested the door handle touch response on both sides, ran a few ignition cycles. Everything was solid. No warning.

He asked what it would have cost at the dealer. I told him to call and find out. He said he'd rather not know. That was fine by me.

Infiniti Q70 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2015 Infiniti Q70. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on the Q70 is a standard job with the right tooling. I connect through the OBD port, pull the security PIN from the body control module, generate new key data, and register one or more new smart fobs to the vehicle. The old fobs get wiped from the system so they can't be used to start the car.
