Out in Hollywood by the Sea, I got a call from a guy who described himself as "not a car person, just an Infiniti person." He'd had his 2015 Q70 for a few years, never touched a fob battery, and one afternoon the dash threw him a key-not-detected warning in the middle of running errands near the waterfront. He ignored it. Then it came back. Then it started taking two or three presses to get a response from the lock button.
By the time he called me, he'd already been to a parts store and picked up a battery. Swapped it himself, thought he fixed it. The warning came back the next morning.
I drove out to him. He met me in the driveway with the fob already in his hand, turning it over like the answer was written on the back.
I opened it up and checked the contact points inside the housing. The battery he'd installed was sitting slightly off-center, and the positive contact had a very subtle bow to it, probably from the original battery sitting in there a long time before it was changed. It wasn't making consistent contact. I straightened the contact, reseated the battery properly, and closed the housing.
Then I did what I always do before I leave: walked through every button, tested the door handle touch response on both sides, ran a few ignition cycles. Everything was solid. No warning.
He asked what it would have cost at the dealer. I told him to call and find out. He said he'd rather not know. That was fine by me.
