2018 Infiniti Q70
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I have to tow my Q70 to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. The dealer will tell you to tow it in, and that is genuinely one option. It is not the only one. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can do the full all-keys-lost procedure at whatever lot, garage, or street the car is sitting on. You skip the tow cost and you skip the wait. I come to the vehicle.

Q: How long does a Q70 all-keys-lost replacement actually take?

On the 2018 Q70, figure 45 to 60 minutes from the time I open the OBD port to the time you're driving away. That covers PIN retrieval, clearing the old key registrations, programming the new fob, cutting the insert blade, and testing every function at the car. Dealers typically require ordering the key by VIN, waiting for delivery, and then scheduling a separate programming appointment on top of that. The whole dealer process can stretch across several days.

Q: I bought a replacement Q70 fob online. Will it work if I just swap the battery and use it?

No. A fob that hasn't been registered to your specific vehicle won't start the car and won't operate the door handles. The Q70's immobilizer requires a programming step that pairs the fob to the vehicle. There is no button sequence or ignition trick that does this on a smart key system. If you already bought one online, it's not a lost cause, it just needs to be programmed by someone with the right diagnostic tools before it does anything useful.

Q: My Q70 push-button start shows a key warning on the dash but the fob is right in my hand. What's going on?

A few things can cause this. Most of the time it comes down to one of three culprits: a weak battery in the fob, interference from other electronics sitting near the fob (other key fobs, a phone, certain wallets with RF-blocking material), or an aging fob that's communicating inconsistently. Start with a fresh name-brand CR2032 and test away from anything that might interfere. If the warning clears, you found it.

2018 Infiniti Q70 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown Ventura, mid-morning. A woman called about a 2018 Infiniti Q70 she'd been nursing along for two weeks. The push-button start was randomly refusing to recognize the fob, and the touch-unlock on the driver door had become a coin flip. She'd already swapped in a new battery herself and figured that would be the end of it.

It wasn't.

When I pulled up she handed me the fob right away. She'd done the battery swap clean, correct cell, seated right. So we weren't chasing that. I ran a quick check through the OBD port and the story got clearer: the original fob was still registered and communicating, but the signal was inconsistent enough to fail the touch-entry antenna on that door handle. The fob itself was marginal, not fully dead, just aging out in a way that showed up at the handle before it showed up at the start button.

She wanted a spare anyway. So I programmed a replacement fob to her vehicle, verified both the new one and the original came back clean on registration, and walked every function. Push-button start, door handle touch unlock on both sides, lock, unlock, the whole sequence. Took care of it right there in the lot, one visit, no tow, no waiting on a VIN-ordered key from a dealer parts department.

She mentioned the dealer quote she'd gotten when the trouble started. I didn't press for details. She just said she saved a good chunk and left with two working keys instead of one unreliable one.

Infiniti Q70 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2018 Infiniti Q70. Can you still make one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on a Q70 is a standard job. The process goes through the OBD port: security PIN retrieval, clearing the existing key registrations from the immobilizer, then enrolling the new fob or fobs. The emergency insert blade in the fob gets cut to your vehicle as part of the same visit. No tow required, no ordering a key and waiting days for it to show up, no separate programming appointment after that. One visit, done on site.
