1999 Infiniti QX4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you wipe old or lost keys from my QX4 so they can't be used to start it?

Yes. When new keys are enrolled in the immobilizer, the process replaces the stored chip data with only the keys present during that session. Any previously programmed key, including a lost or stolen one, loses its authorization. This is the correct response if a key goes missing and you're concerned about vehicle security. Done on site, no tow required.

Q: Does the 1999 QX4 key have any kind of emergency backup entry method?

The 1999 QX4 uses a conventional metal key that goes directly into the door lock and ignition cylinder, so there's no hidden blade to release or backup fob to dig out. The key itself is the emergency option. What this means practically is that if your key is lost or the blade breaks, you're locked out and stuck until a replacement is cut.

Q: My 1999 QX4 cranks but won't start. Could it be a key programming issue?

That exact symptom, engine cranks normally but refuses to fire, is the classic sign of an immobilizer that didn't recognize the key's transponder chip. On the QX4 of this era, if the chip isn't read correctly, the system cuts fuel or spark and the engine just spins without catching. Before assuming it's a fuel or ignition problem, check whether the security light on the dash is staying on or flashing after you turn the key.

Q: Can I get a replacement transponder key made from the key code, or does the vehicle need to be present?

Both the cutting and the programming need to happen at the vehicle. The blade can be cut from a key code if one is on file, but the transponder chip still has to be enrolled with the car present and the OBD port connected. No way around that part remotely. I come to you, which sidesteps the towing question entirely.

1999 Infiniti QX4 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Meta Street in Downtown Oxnard when the call came in. Owner of a 1999 QX4, had one key left, and it was cracked through the plastic head. The key still worked for the moment, but he could feel the chip shifting around inside and didn't want to find out what happened when it finally broke loose completely.

When I got there he had the key wrapped in electrical tape to hold it together. Smart move, but not a permanent fix.

I decoded the blade at the door, cut a new key to match, then enrolled the transponder chip through the OBD port. The whole job was done in the parking area before he needed to move the truck. He held the taped-up original next to the new key and just laughed a little.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of a few days because they'd need to order the key. He wasn't surprised I could do it same day. He was a little surprised it cost him a fraction of what they wanted.

Infiniti QX4 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 1999 Infiniti QX4?▼

Skip the dealer and call a mobile locksmith who carries the right equipment for late-90s Nissan and Infiniti transponder systems. All-keys-lost on the QX4 means the immobilizer has no enrolled key to compare against, so a standard copy won't work. The chip in the new key has to be programmed as the first registered key from scratch.
