2001 Infiniti QX4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I have to tow my QX4 to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. Towing to the dealer is one option, not the only one. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment comes to the vehicle. On a 2001 QX4, the all-keys-lost procedure does not require the vehicle to move anywhere. The work happens at the OBD port with the truck sitting exactly where it is. Towing adds cost on top of whatever the dealer charges for the key itself.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take on a 2001 QX4?

Typically 45 to 75 minutes on site. That covers PIN extraction, cutting the blade, programming the transponder, and running a start test to confirm the immobilizer accepted the new key. Vehicles this age tend to move faster than newer platforms because the security architecture is more straightforward to access with professional equipment. The dealer process on a vehicle like this generally means ordering the key by VIN, waiting for it to arrive, then scheduling a separate programming visit.

Q: My 2001 QX4 cranks fine but immediately stalls every time. Could this be a key problem?

Crank-and-stall on this vehicle is a known symptom when the immobilizer does not recognize the transponder in the key. The engine fires on the starter, then the immobilizer cuts fuel and it dies within a second or two. It does it every single time, consistently, which is what separates it from a fuel or sensor issue that comes and goes.

Q: Can I program a spare key for my 2001 QX4 myself at home?

Not on this vehicle. The 2001 QX4 does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for adding transponder keys. Registering a new key to the immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment and the vehicle's security PIN. If you bought a key blank online, you still need someone with the right tools to cut it to your specific vehicle and program the chip. The blank alone does nothing.

2001 Infiniti QX4 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off Anacapa near the Presidio neighborhood on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. An oral surgeon said he'd lost the only key to his 2001 Infiniti QX4 and the truck had been sitting in his office lot for two days.

He'd already looked up my BSIS license number, LCO#6792, verified it on the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services site, and read through my reviews before he called. He told me that upfront, which I respect. He wanted to know what he was getting before anyone touched his vehicle.

I drove over and found the QX4 sitting right where he said it would be. All-keys-lost on a vehicle this age means going in through the OBD port to pull the security PIN, then cutting and programming a new key on site. No tow, no dealer order, no waiting a week for a VIN-matched key to show up so they can schedule a second appointment to program it.

The job took right around an hour from the time I pulled up to the time I handed him a working key and watched him start the truck himself. He turned the key, the engine caught and held, no stall, no warning light. He held the key for a second like he was waiting for it to change its mind.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him pause and then start Googling. He didn't bring the number up again after the job was done.

Infiniti QX4 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2001 QX4. Can you still make one?▼

Yes, and it's one of the more common calls I get on vehicles this age. All-keys-lost on the 2001 QX4 means accessing the immobilizer system through the OBD port, extracting the security PIN, cutting a new key blade to your vehicle, and programming the transponder so the immobilizer accepts it. The old lost keys get erased from the system in the process, so they can't start the truck if they turn up later. No tow needed.
