Out near Refugio State Beach in Santa Barbara, a guy flagged me down through a referral. He had a 2001 Infiniti QX4, one key left, and the rubber head was cracked so badly the transponder chip was almost falling out. He had been nursing it for months, wrapping electrical tape around the head to keep the PCF7935 chip from shifting.
He told me he called the Infiniti dealer first. They wanted him to bring the vehicle in, leave it, and wait for a VIN-cut key to ship. Multiple days, and he uses the QX4 daily.
I pulled up to his spot, confirmed the NATS5 system by watching the security indicator on the dash cycle, and got to work. Read the immobilizer data through the OBD-II port with my ACDP, extracted the PIN from the BCM (part number 28590-2W100 on these R50-chassis QX4s), and registered a fresh NSN14 blank with a new PCF7935 chip. Cut the blade on my mobile Condor to match his existing key, then tested. Dash security light went solid for two seconds and off. Engine fired right up.
He turned the key twice more just to be sure. Then he peeled the electrical tape off the old key and tossed it in the cupholder like it owed him something.
Whole thing took about 35 minutes. He kept the truck in his own parking spot the entire time.
