A dermatologist with a clinic near Goleta Beach Park in Santa Barbara called me about her 2002 Infiniti QX4. She needed a spare transponder key but had read horror stories about unlicensed operators frying immobilizer modules on older Infiniti trucks. The NATS-5 system on these is pretty cooperative once you have the correct PIN. Cut the NSN14 blank on site, seated a fresh PCF7936 (ID46) chip, and registered it to the NATS ECU alongside her original.
Then the walk-through: key in, wait for the security light on the dash to go solid, crank it, confirm no blinking. Pulled the new key, tried her original, same result. Both registered clean.
She watched the whole thing from the sidewalk, arms crossed, like she was supervising a procedure. When I handed her the spare she just turned it over in her hand a couple times, nodded, and said "that was fast."
The dealer had quoted her a week's wait plus a tow to Thousand Oaks. She drove home five minutes later.
