A graduate student near Douglas Family Preserve in Santa Barbara called me in a bad spot. Another locksmith had already tried to program a key to his 2003 Infiniti QX4 and bailed halfway through. Left fault codes in the immobilizer module, charged him for the attempt, and told him to tow it to the dealer. The QX4 would not start with any key after that.

I plugged my Autel IM608 into the OBD-II port and saw the mess right away. The NATS5 module was stuck mid-registration, codes still sitting in the BCM. The previous tech had forced a procedure meant for a different Nissan platform, which left the immobilizer in a state where it rejected everything.
Cleared the codes. Verified the BCM was back to a clean baseline. Then ran a proper NATS5 key learning sequence from scratch, registering his 4D60 transponder chip the way the system expects it. His key was a standard NI02T cut, nothing exotic.
The QX4 started clean. NATS light cycled off on the dash like it should. No lingering codes.
I did not charge him extra for the cleanup because fixing someone else's mess is just part of doing the job right. The whole thing, including the diagnostic and re-registration, still came in at a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
