A patent attorney in the Downtown area of Santa Barbara had already been burned once. He called one of those "$79 locksmith" ads for his 1997 Jaguar XK8. The guy who showed up charged him close to five times that, handed over a key that physically turned the Tibbe ignition barrel but did nothing else. The immobilizer light on the dash just blinked and the 4.0 stayed dead. No chip data written. Expensive paperweight.
He found me through Google Guaranteed and the first thing he asked was how to verify I was licensed. Fair question after what he went through.
I gave him my BSIS number right on the phone, LCO 6792. He checked it on the state site while we were still talking.
At his building I pulled up with the Smart Pro loaded with Jaguar X100 coverage. The XK8's Marelli immobilizer needs the transponder ID written to the ECU, not just cut to the blade profile. Tibbe cuts are six positions, each with four possible depths, so the mechanical side has to be right too. I cut the key, wrote the fixed-code transponder, and synced it to the ECU through the diagnostic port under the dash.
He turned it over and the V8 caught on the first try. He just sat there for a second with his hand still on the key, like he was waiting for something to go wrong.
It did not. My quoted price was what he paid. The money from the first locksmith was gone.
