1997 Jaguar XK Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
On Upper State Street, not far from the older residential stretch where the craftsman houses give way to the condos, I got a call from a guy who was already frustrated before I picked up.
He had found a locksmith through a sponsored ad, paid a real amount of money, and was standing next to a 1997 Jaguar XK that would crank and die every single time he tried to start it.
The key went in. The ignition turned. The engine caught for about a second, then quit. He said it felt like it was running out of fuel. It wasn't.
When I got there, I looked at the key first. It was cut correctly to the car, which was the one thing the previous guy got right. But when I tested it, the transponder chip inside had not been programmed. The car was doing exactly what it was supposed to do: cranking, recognizing the wrong credential, and shutting the engine back down. Classic immobilizer behavior on this generation.
I had the right equipment in the van. Programming a transponder to this car is a process that takes time and the correct tool coverage for late-1990s Jaguar security systems. I worked through it on site, in his parking space, without a tow, without a dealer appointment, and without making him wait until Tuesday.
When it started and stayed running, he just sat there for a second. He'd been locked out of a car he owned for two days.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out, but that I'd bet it was more than what he paid me, plus a tow, plus however many days it sat in a service queue. He didn't seem surprised.
