It was a Tuesday night, past ten, in one of those office parks off Oxnard Boulevard in Downtown Oxnard. The parking lot had maybe three cars left in it, and one of them was a 2014 XK sitting dark with nobody going anywhere.
The owner had been working late through filing season. Her only fob was gone, and she was running on fumes. She thought it might be in her office, then the conference room, then she walked the lot twice with her phone light before she accepted it was just gone.
She called me not really knowing what to expect. She didn't have her registration in front of her, wasn't sure where the VIN was, and sounded like someone who had already solved twelve problems that day and did not want this to be number thirteen.
I told her to stand outside the car, shine her phone through the base of the windshield on the driver's side, and read me the number stamped there. She found it in about thirty seconds. From there I already knew what I was dealing with. The XK in this generation runs a Key Vault Module that stores key credentials, and all-keys-lost on these requires reading that module's data and generating a matched key file before anything gets programmed.
I prepped the right blank on the way, met her under the parking lot lights, and walked through the job on the trunk lid of my van. Got into the car with my tools, pulled the module data, built the key file, programmed the fob, tested every function including the emergency blade in the door cylinder. She stood there watching the whole thing, which I actually prefer. Easier than explaining it afterward.
She drove home that night. The dealer was closed and would have quoted her a number she didn't want to hear plus a tow. The VIN she found with her phone flashlight is still the single most useful thing anyone can give me before I roll out.
