A woman up in Mission Canyon area in Santa Barbara flagged me down about a spare key for her 1999 Jaguar XK8 coupe. She'd been running on one key for years and finally got nervous about it. Fair enough. One key on a car with a Megamos immobilizer system is a gamble.
She asked me point blank if the key would be "dealer quality." She didn't want a backup hidden in a kitchen drawer. She wanted something she could hand to her husband and forget about.
Honest answer: the tiered key blank I carry uses the same Megamos ID13 glass transponder and the same Tibbe (TBE1) six-cut blade profile as the factory original. Functional difference in daily use is zero. The Jaguar dealer in town quoted her a wait of over a week and a tow-in, because they wanted the car on site. I did it in her driveway in about 25 minutes.
I decoded her existing key for the Tibbe cuts, ran the blade on my Condor, then seated the ID13 chip and programmed it through the diagnostic port with her original key present so the security module accepted both. Tested ignition start, tested the immobilizer response on each key individually.
She swapped between the two keys three times before she believed it. Then she just nodded and put the spare on her ring. That was it. No drama, no tow, a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
