A cracked chip will read fine most of the time and then drop out intermittently. A transponder tester will tell you in about thirty seconds if the chip is degrading.

Third, corrosion on the ignition barrel contacts. On a twenty-year-old car, especially one that has seen coastal air in a place like Ventura, the electrical contact inside the ignition cylinder can oxidize enough to cause inconsistent reads. That one is less common but worth ruling out if the battery and the chip both test fine.
