A worn blade can still turn the cylinder but may not decode cleanly, and a cracked shell sometimes means the transponder inside has been rattling around loose, which causes intermittent no-start issues that look like an immobilizer fault.

What I do is decode the existing key before anything else, cut a fresh blade to spec, transfer or replace the transponder, and then test the result in the door lock and the ignition. If the internal electronics look compromised I do a full replacement and re-enroll on site. No need to order ahead or wait for parts to come in.

Check whether a dashboard warning appears when you try to start it. A key-not-detected style warning points directly at the immobilizer side of the problem. If the car cranks normally but simply will not catch and there is a security indicator staying lit, the transponder or its enrollment is the likely cause. That is diagnosable and fixable on site.

I bought a replacement key online for my 2002 XK. Will it work as-is?

Not without programming. A blank key cut to your vehicle will operate the locks, but the transponder inside it has not been enrolled to your car's immobilizer. The engine will crank and refuse to start. The cut and the chip enrollment are two separate steps, and online keys only cover the first one at best. You still need the programming side done with proper equipment before that key is any use for starting the car.

Pretty urgent, honestly. The 2002 XK is old enough that finding a working original key from a secondary source is a gamble. If your last key is lost or damaged, you are looking at an all-keys-lost situation, which is more involved than adding a key when one already works. The process is longer, the equipment requirements are higher, and the cost goes up.

Making a spare while you still have a working key is the easier, faster, and less expensive version of this job. I have done plenty of all-keys-lost calls in the Downtown Ventura area and they always take longer than a simple spare. Get the spare made now and keep it somewhere separate from your primary key.
