1998 Jaguar XK Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from the Samarkand neighborhood in Santa Barbara, a Sunday afternoon. Guy had a 1998 Jaguar XK8 coupe sitting in his driveway, turning over strong but cutting out after about two seconds every time. Classic immobilizer kill.
He told me another locksmith had come out, tried to clone his spare key onto a new blank, and left when it didn't work. Charged him anyway. The owner had been starting the car with the spare for months after the original key cracked at the bow, and now neither key would keep the engine running.
When I got there I checked the basics first. The amber immobilizer lamp on the dash was flashing after each crank attempt, which tells you the security module is not seeing a valid transponder signal. I tested both keys at the ignition coil reader. The original cracked key had a dead Megamos 13 chip, probably damaged when the bow split. The spare was reading intermittently, which explained the on-and-off problems he'd been having for weeks before it quit for good.
I cut a new Tibbe key to code from the lock data on site, programmed a fresh Megamos 13 transponder through the security module, and the XK8 fired and stayed running on the first turn. Tested it five more times cold. Solid every time.
He stood there watching the tach settle at idle like he didn't trust it yet. I get that. Two seconds of run and die over and over will make you suspicious of good news.
