Parked near the water off Stearns Wharf on a Sunday, a guy flagged me down. He had a 1998 Jaguar XK and one key. Not a backup anywhere.
He explained it pretty simply: the key worked fine until it didn't. Turned it one morning, nothing. Then it cranked but died immediately after. He had already gone to a shop that told him the immobilizer module was failing and quoted him a number that made him sit down. He decided to look for another option before committing to that.

When a transponder-equipped XK cranks and then stalls right away, that is almost always a communication failure between the transponder and the reader ring around the cylinder, not a dead module. The module gets blamed a lot on these. Sometimes it is a legitimate fault. More often it is a key that was not programmed completely, or a reader ring that has shifted or degraded over the years.
I was able to read the key data, confirm what was and was not registered, and get a correctly cut and properly registered key working in the car. He drove off the waterfront parking area without a tow, without a new module, and without the dealer bill that had been hanging over him.
He mentioned the first shop had been pretty confident about that module. I just told him the module is not always the answer, and sometimes the simpler explanation is the right one.
