2000 Jaguar XK
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my XK to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. Towing to the dealer is their process, not the only process. A mobile locksmith with the right tooling comes to wherever the car is sitting. Dealer timelines on an all-keys-lost job for a vehicle this age can stretch to multiple days once you factor in towing, intake, parts sourcing, and actual service time. The dealer quote owners have reported for Jaguar key work in this generation is not small.

Q: How long does a key replacement actually take on a 2000 XK?

A standard spare or replacement when you still have a working key is usually under an hour on site. All-keys-lost takes longer because of the security enrollment process, but it is still a single visit. Compare that to the dealer where tow-in, intake, and scheduling alone can push you to day two before anyone touches the car. I do these at the vehicle, start to finish, in one trip.

Q: My 2000 XK starts fine but then stalls out almost immediately. Could the key be the problem?

On a transponder key vehicle from this era, a crank-and-stall pattern where the engine fires briefly and then cuts out is a classic sign that the immobilizer did not fully accept the key. The ignition cylinder reads the key mechanically and turns, but if the transponder signal is not recognized correctly, the security system cuts fuel or spark shortly after startup.

Q: Can I buy a replacement transponder key online and program it myself?

The key blank, maybe. The programming, no. The transponder chip in a replacement key for this generation XK has to be registered to the car's immobilizer using diagnostic equipment. There is no ignition-turn sequence or DIY trick that works here. If you buy a cut and unregistered key online, it will turn the locks and the ignition cylinder but the car will not start, or it will start and stall.

2000 Jaguar XK Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out near Casitas Springs on a Saturday morning. He had a 2000 Jaguar XK coupe, British racing green, and his only key had snapped. Not lost, not failing, actually snapped in the door lock cylinder. Half of it was still sitting inside the lock.

He found me through a search, not YouTube this time, just old-fashioned Google. He had already called the Jaguar dealer and was told to tow the car in, wait for a parts order, and plan on several days minimum. He was not happy about that.

I drove out to him in Casitas Springs with my extraction tools and my programming equipment. Pulled the broken blade out of the cylinder without pulling the whole lock apart. Then I decoded the cut from the lock itself so I did not need to chase down a key code from paperwork he did not have. Cut a new key blade on site, registered the replacement transponder to the immobilizer, and tested it in the ignition and both door locks before I packed up.

The whole visit was well under two hours. He started the car himself, sat there for a second, then just nodded. He had been bracing for a multi-day ordeal. The dealer was not wrong that they could fix it. They just were not the only option, and they were not coming to his driveway.

Jaguar XK Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2000 Jaguar XK. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost is doable on this generation. The process involves registering a new transponder key to the immobilizer from scratch, which requires the right diagnostic tooling to communicate with the vehicle's security system. Nothing gets mailed in, nothing gets towed. I come to the car with the equipment to handle the security enrollment on site. The old keys, wherever they are, get locked out in the process so they cannot start the vehicle.
