2005 Kia Sedona
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than the Kia dealer for this van?

On a 2005 Sedona, yes, and by a wide margin. This is one of the simpler key jobs out there because it's a mechanical key with no electronics involved. Dealers still charge shop labor rates, extraction fees if the key is broken or stuck, and a separate cutting charge. A mobile locksmith skips the overhead entirely and handles it all at your location for way less. You're not saving 10 percent, you're saving a good chunk.

Q: Does the price include cutting and everything else?

Yes. One price covers the key blank, cutting it to your vehicle, and testing it in both the door and the ignition before I leave. On this van there's nothing else to add because the key is entirely mechanical. No programming labor, no fob syncing, no module fees. What you're quoted on the phone is the number.

Q: I have a broken key stuck in my 2005 Sedona's lock. Can you still make a replacement, or do I need to go to a dealer?

Broken blade in the cylinder is one of the most common calls I get on this generation of van. The lock cylinders on the first-generation Sedona are known for being hard on worn or bent keys, especially if the key had a small crack at the shoulder and someone kept forcing it. I can extract the broken piece, decode the cut from the lock face, and have two new keys made right there.

Q: Can I get a duplicate made at a hardware store instead of calling a locksmith?

If you have a working key and the blade is in good shape, a hardware store can duplicate it. The catch is accuracy. The key blank selection at most hardware stores for a 2005 Sedona is hit or miss, and a slightly off cut can work in the ignition but not the door, or vice versa. Locksmiths cut to tighter tolerances and test both. If your current key is worn, duplicating a worn key just gives you two worn keys.

2005 Kia Sedona Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over on The Avenue in Ventura, a woman called me about her 2005 Kia Sedona. She'd bought it used a couple years back with one key, told herself she'd get a spare made eventually, and never did. Classic story.

The key didn't get lost. It broke. The blade snapped off inside the driver's door lock while she was trying to get in one morning. Half the key in her hand, the other half stuck in the cylinder. Van sitting in the driveway, kids waiting inside.

First thing was the extraction. I got the broken blade out of the lock without pulling the cylinder, which saved a chunk of time. Then I decoded the cut right off the lock face and had two new keys cut on the spot. Both tested in the door and the ignition before I packed up.

No programming, no scan tool, no waiting on a dealer to order anything. The whole call took under 45 minutes. She asked if she should have just gone to the dealer and I told her they would have quoted her the labor to extract the broken blade as a separate line item before they even talked about cutting a key. She said that tracked with what her neighbor paid somewhere else for something similar.

Two keys, both working, done at her driveway. The dealer route would have cost her more and taken longer.

Kia Sedona Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2005 Kia Sedona key replacement cost?▼

Call us and we'll give you a number, but it's going to be a fraction of what the dealer wants. The 2005 Sedona is a straight mechanical key, so there's no programming fee, no fob cost, no scan tool charge. You're paying for the key blank, the cut, and the mobile service to your location. All in, one price, no separate line items.
