Out in North Ranch, I got a call from a guy who had just come back from a long weekend trip. He put his 2018 Sedona in park, pulled the fob out of his pocket, and the van would not acknowledge it at all. No chime, no response from the door handles, just the key-not-detected warning sitting on the dash like a bad omen.
He had already replaced the battery himself. Did it right, CR2032, correct orientation, everything. Still nothing.
When I pulled up, I did the first thing I always do on these: held the fob directly against the start button. The van fired right up. That told me the fob itself was alive, the transponder was communicating, and the immobilizer was happy. The problem was signal range.
I opened the fob case on the hood. The battery was fine, but the small internal antenna trace on the circuit board had a hairline separation right at one of the solder points. Probably from being dropped, maybe just age. It was enough to drop the transmit range down to almost nothing, which is why holding it directly to the button worked but carrying it in a pocket did not.
New fob, programmed on site through the diagnostic port, emergency blade cut to match. I walked all six buttons and tested door handle detection before I closed up my kit.
He had already gotten a quote from the dealer. It was a significant number, and they wanted the van brought in, which would have meant arranging a tow since driving it around with no reliable key detection felt like a gamble. He ended up paying a fraction of that, right in his own driveway.
