Over near California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, a barista had been driving her 2012 Kia Sedona on one key for about three years. Bought the van used, always meant to get a spare, never did.
Then the key blade cracked at the pivot and snapped clean off when she tried to open the driver door. She was standing in a shared driveway at a fourplex with the flip key housing in one hand and the blade stuck in the door lock. Zero working keys.
I got there and checked the broken housing first. The ID46 chip was still alive inside the cracked shell. That meant I could read transponder data off the existing chip with my VVDI2 instead of running a full PIN-based all-keys-lost procedure through the Kia immobilizer. Saved a good chunk of time. I extracted the snapped blade from the lock cylinder, decoded her lock with my Lishi HY20, and cut two fresh key blades on site.
Her original flip key was a three-button unit, part number SY55WY8212, so I rebuilt it into a new aftermarket shell with the salvaged chip transplanted in. Then cut the second key as a basic transponder spare.
She went from zero keys to two in about 40 minutes. Stood there turning the ignition on and off a few times like she was making sure the van agreed. It did.
If you have broken key pieces, bring them. It changes the job.
