I got a call from a guy parked near the Botanic Garden Area in Thousand Oaks. He'd been hiking, came back to his 2011 Kia Sedona, and the key blade had snapped inside the door lock. Half in his hand, half in the cylinder. A different locksmith he'd called first told him the whole cylinder needed to come out, maybe get drilled.
I brought my extraction tools and worked the broken piece out without touching the wafer surfaces. Once the fragment was clear, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly, which gave me the exact cut depths I needed without guessing or going back to a key code database. No damage to the cylinder, no drilling, no replacement parts.
From the decode I cut a new key blank on site, then moved to the OBD port and programmed the transponder chip to the vehicle. Start test, it fired right up. I walked him through what happened mechanically with the snap, because it almost always comes down to a worn key that had been flexed one too many times at the bow.
He mentioned the other locksmith's quote included a new cylinder plus labor. What I charged was a fraction of that, and the car left looking exactly the way it arrived.
