A night janitor called me from a laundromat parking lot over in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks. It was around 10:30 at night. His only key to his 2009 Sedona was gone. No spare, no backup. He was about to call a tow truck just to get the van somewhere safe until morning.
He didn't have his registration on him and didn't know what a VIN was. I talked him through it on the phone. Told him to look through the windshield, bottom left of the glass on the driver's side. He found it. Then I had him check his insurance app for the registration. It was right there.
With the VIN I already knew his key specs before I left. Prepped a KK10 blank with a PCF7936 chip and headed out.
On site I ran the all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port using my IM608. The system wiped all old key data, then I programmed his fresh transponder key matched to the immobilizer module. Cut the HY20 blade under the parking lot lights. Also built him a separate remote for the power doors since the Sedona uses a standalone remote that is not integrated into the key head on base trims.
He was quiet the whole time. Then when it started on the first turn, he just kind of exhaled and said "I thought I was sleeping here tonight."
He drove home. The dealer would have meant a tow, a wait, and a much bigger bill. The VIN is the single most useful thing you can give me when you call.
