I was parked off Gonzales Road finishing up another job when the call came in from El Rio. Owner of a 2021 Lexus LC, only key, wouldn't start. She had already done the battery swap. CR2032, correct size, seated right. Push-button still dark.
She told me the dealer's service line said to tow it in and they'd work it into the schedule. Probably next day, maybe the day after. She had somewhere to be that evening and the car was sitting in her driveway going nowhere.
I pulled up, and she met me outside. I did the basic check first: held the fob up to the start button directly to see if the car would read it at close range. It did, barely. The internal antenna loop on fobs like this one can take a hit if the fob got dropped or sat on, and when that happens the read range drops to almost nothing. The vehicle's own antennas aren't always strong enough to pull a weak signal from across the cabin.
We decided on a replacement fob on the spot. I pulled the new one from the van, cut the emergency blade to her vehicle right there in the driveway, and registered the new fob through the OBD port. The whole thing took just under 45 minutes.
When it was done I walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the start button, all four fob buttons. Everything answered. She had her car back before dark, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost her, and without a tow truck ever showing up.
