2023 Lexus LC
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: The Lexus dealer told me I have to tow the car in for key replacement. Is that true?

It's what dealers say, but it's not your only option. Lexus service advisors routinely tell owners the car has to come in for any smart key work, especially all-keys-lost situations. And yes, if you use the dealer, towing is your problem and your bill before they even start. A mobile locksmith with the right professional equipment can do the same key enrollment at your location.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you'll cut a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. We also verify the VIN directly from the dash plate or door jamb sticker on the LC. Same standard a dealer holds, just done on site in a few minutes instead of at a service counter.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2023 LC?

Maybe, but check the factory FCC ID on your existing fob first and confirm the one you bought matches it exactly. The LC uses a specific fob, and not every aftermarket or salvage-yard unit is compatible. If the part number and FCC ID line up, we can attempt enrollment through the OBD port with professional diagnostic equipment. That said, buying a fob online to save money usually saves less than people expect once you price in the programming.

Q: My fob battery is brand new but the LC is still showing a key warning on the dash. What's going on?

A few things can cause this even after a fresh CR2032. First, check that the battery is seated correctly and that the contacts inside the fob aren't bent or corroded. A slightly off-center battery will read like a dead one. If the battery is genuinely fine and seated right, the issue is more likely the fob itself or how the vehicle security system has the key registered.

2023 Lexus LC Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in College Estates, I got a call from someone who'd been driving her 2023 Lexus LC for about eight months on the original key with no spare. She'd been putting off getting one cut because the dealer quote stopped her cold. Too much, too long a wait, and they wanted the car dropped off.

She wasn't locked out. She was just finally ready to stop gambling on one key.

I pulled up to her driveway on a Tuesday afternoon. The LC is a different kind of car to work on compared to most of what I see out here. The fob is a four-button unit and the programming goes through the OBD port using professional diagnostic equipment. This isn't a car where you run an ignition sequence and call it done. The vehicle security system needs to see the new fob registered through the right tooling, and the transponder chip inside the key has to be enrolled alongside it.

I connected through the port, walked through the add-a-key sequence, and tested every button on the new fob before I even put my tools away. Lock, unlock, the whole set. Then I had her walk up to the door and test the proximity behavior herself, because she needed to trust it, not just take my word.

Start to finish, about 30 minutes in her driveway. The dealer comparison only came up when she mentioned what they'd quoted her. She said she saved a good chunk. I believed her.
