Got a call from a guy over in Los Robles Trail in Thousand Oaks. His 2002 MINI Hardtop 2 Door had one key left and the remote side of it was completely dead. Lock, unlock, nothing. He had been turning the blade to start it and manually locking the doors for about two weeks before he finally looked into getting a replacement.
He told me he called the dealer first. They wanted to order the CWE100710 blank, have him tow the car in, and schedule a half-day appointment. Weeks out. He said the whole thing felt like more hassle than the car was worth at that age.
I showed up with the correct key blank, cut it to his door, and programmed the PCF7935 transponder through the OBD port to sync with the EWS3 module. Then paired the remote. Two buttons, lock and unlock, both responding clean.
While I was testing, he popped the hood and just stood there watching me walk the doors. Lock from ten feet, unlock from ten feet, blade in the ignition, engine fires. He nodded like he had been holding his breath the whole time.
His old key still worked too. I told him to keep it as a backup in a drawer somewhere. He said that drawer is how he ended up with one key in the first place. Fair point.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes in his driveway. A fraction of what the dealer wanted, no tow, no waiting room.
