Got a call from a guy near Sapwi Trails Community Park in Thousand Oaks. His 2004 MINI Hardtop 2 Door had one key left and the plastic housing was split clean in half, held together with electrical tape. The lock and unlock buttons had stopped working weeks ago because the board contacts were exposed. He said he had been locking the doors manually like it was 1987.
I got there and pulled the key apart on his hood. The PCB inside was actually fine, just the CR2032 had corroded a little where moisture got in through the crack. Cleaned the battery terminals on the board, dropped a fresh CR2032 in, and tested the remote. Both buttons came back.
But he also wanted a spare, which was the real reason for the call. Cut a new CWE100710 blank to the factory code, then plugged into the OBD-II port to sync the ID44 transponder chip through the EWS3 system. The MINI needs the new key's chip ID written into the EWS module, and then the DME has to recognize the handshake. Took about 25 minutes total.
He stood there watching the whole time, arms crossed, not saying a word. When the spare started the engine on the first turn he just nodded once and said "alright then." That was the whole celebration.
He had called the dealer earlier that week. They quoted him a wait of over a week just to get the blank in. I had it done before his parking meter would have run out.
