Got a call from a guy near Bard Reservoir in Thousand Oaks. Two MINIs in the driveway, his 2003 Hardtop and his wife's daily. He needed a spare for the Hardtop because they were down to one working key and had been sharing it for months, passing it back and forth like a relay baton.
When I pulled up he had the MINI parked nose-out with the hood popped. He thought I'd need under there. I didn't. Plugged into the OBD-II port, read the EWS3 module, pulled the key data. Cut the CWE100710 blank on my mobile machine to match the factory bitting, then seated the PCF7935 chip and wrote it to the immobilizer.
The part that always takes longer than people expect is the testing. I turned it over, let it idle, killed it, restarted. Cycled the lock and unlock buttons. Walked around the car hitting lock from different angles because the 315 MHz range on these old MINI remotes is not generous. It all worked clean.
He asked if I could do a spare for the other car while I was there. I could. Both vehicles done on his driveway in under an hour total. He said they'd been putting it off for weeks because the dealer wanted a scheduled appointment and a half-day wait per car. I was already packing up.
