I was parked off Wildwood off one of the residential streets that feeds back toward the hills when I pulled up to this particular job. The owner had the car in the driveway, which is always the easy scenario.
She had one key left. The original had gone missing months before and she'd been putting off dealing with it. Then the surviving key started acting up at the ignition, and that got her moving.
The key read fine some mornings and gave her grief on others. She described it as the car being moody. I'd heard that before.
I opened the key housing right there on the hood of my van. The CR2032 was original, which on a 2013 means it had been in there for about a decade. Still showing some voltage on the meter, just not enough to be consistent. The contact point on the positive side had a thin film of oxidation, the kind you only see if you're looking for it.
New battery, cleaned contacts, closed the housing properly. Then the part that actually matters: I connected to the OBD port, confirmed the key was registering correctly with the immobilizer, and tested every function. Lock, unlock, and the third button. Ignition start. All of it.
She asked if that was really all it needed. I told her the battery was the whole problem, but I wasn't leaving until the system confirmed it.
If she'd gone to the dealer, they'd have wanted to schedule her, possibly order parts, and charge accordingly. She paid a fraction of that and didn't move the car once.
