Got a call from the Casa Conejo neighborhood in Thousand Oaks. Guy had a 2011 MINI Hardtop 2 Door sitting in his driveway, one key to his name, and the remote buttons had stopped working weeks ago. He'd been manually locking and unlocking with the blade. Then that morning the car threw a steering lock fault on the dash and wouldn't start at all.
He told me he called the MINI dealer first. They wanted him to tow it in, leave it for two days minimum, and pay for diagnostics before they'd even talk about a key. He didn't love that plan.
I pulled up, plugged into the OBD-II port, and read the CAS module. The existing key's transponder ID was still stored and the CAS was responding. The EWS (immobilizer) wasn't the issue. His steering column lock module had thrown a momentary fault, which is a known R56 problem, and it had cleared itself by the time I got there. The real job was cutting and programming a proper spare key so he'd stop living on the edge with one key on an eleven-year-old MINI.
Cut the HU92 blade to factory spec, programmed the PCF7945 transponder chip through the CAS, synced the three-button remote. Tested lock, unlock, trunk. Tested ignition start twice. Whole thing took about 25 minutes.
He sat on his front steps the whole time, watching. When both keys started the car back to back, he just nodded and said "that's it?" That was it.
