Q: What exactly is a smart key and what makes it different from a regular car key?

A smart key combines a physical blade with an internal transponder chip and a radio frequency remote in a single unit. The blade operates the ignition cylinder. The chip communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer so the engine is authorized to run. The remote handles wireless lock and unlock. All three of those things have to work together.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2014 MINI Hardtop. Can a new key still be made, or does the car have to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost on the F56 MINI is a job we handle regularly. When no working key exists, the process involves connecting to the vehicle through the OBD port with professional programming equipment, clearing the existing key data from the immobilizer, and registering the new fob from scratch. It takes longer than a simple spare key job because of the security protocol involved, but it does not require a tow to the dealer. We come to the car wherever it is parked.

Q: My MINI fob works fine up close but the range has gotten really short. Is something wrong with the key?

Almost always a battery on its way out. The CR2032 in the F56 fob will degrade gradually, and short range is usually the first sign. Swap the battery before assuming anything else is wrong. If fresh battery does not fix it, the next thing to check is whether the contacts inside the fob are clean and seated correctly. If range is still poor after that, the fob itself may need attention.

A woman in Westlake Village called on a Tuesday morning. She was in the parking lot of a shopping center off Agoura Road and her MINI would not respond to the fob at all.

She could still get in using the emergency blade tucked inside the key, and the car started, but the remote lock and unlock were completely dead. She had already tried standing closer to the car, pointing the fob directly at the door handle, clicking it a dozen times. Nothing.

I pulled up and the first thing I did was crack open the fob right there on the hood. The CR2032 inside looked fine at a glance, but when I tested it, the voltage had dropped just enough to kill the remote signal while leaving barely enough power to communicate at close range during startup. Common on these. Swapped the battery, reassembled the fob correctly, and the locks answered immediately.

She stood there for a second and then just laughed. She had been assuming the whole key needed to be replaced and had already called the dealer before she found us. The dealer told her to bring the car in and plan on leaving it.

She did not leave it anywhere. Whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes in the lot. She drove off with a working key and kept the rest of her Tuesday.
