Got a call from a guy in North Ranch Open Space, Thousand Oaks. His 2008 MINI Hardtop had one working key left, and the blade was worn so thin it was getting tough to turn in the ignition. He had been jiggling it for weeks.
He told me he called the MINI dealer first. Two-week wait for an appointment, then they wanted him to tow it in because the worn key might not start it reliably enough to drive there. That is a lot of hassle for a key.
I set up on his driveway. Cut a fresh HU92 blade on the new IYZKEYR5602 remote head, matched to the door cylinder since the ignition wafer readings off his worn key were no good anymore. Programmed the PCF7935 transponder through the OBD-II port and paired the three remote buttons: lock, unlock, trunk release. The whole job ran about 25 minutes.
The part he kept coming back to was the ignition. He turned the new key and it was smooth, no jiggle, no wiggle. He just sat there and turned it off and on again like he was rediscovering his own car. Said he forgot it was supposed to feel like that.
His old key went in the junk drawer. New one works exactly like factory, done right there in the driveway.
