2007 MINI Hardtop 2 Door Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy parked near The Oaks Mall Area in Thousand Oaks. He had his 2007 MINI Hardtop 2 Door, one key, and that key had just stopped doing anything remotely useful.
The blade still turned the ignition, but the lock and unlock buttons were dead and the range had been shrinking for weeks. He ignored it until he locked himself out by habit -- hit the button walking away, nothing happened, door stayed unlocked, someone else locked it manually later, and then he was standing in the parking lot.
I pulled up with the key blank and my programming kit. The original fob battery was the factory CR2032, and when I tested voltage it was running low enough to explain everything. Swapped the battery first, reseated the contacts, and the remote function came back on its own. That happens more than people expect on these all-in-one remote head keys.
He still wanted a second key cut and programmed while I was there, which was the smart call. On a vehicle this age with only one key, you're one bad day away from a tow. I cut the new blade to match his locks, connected to the OBD port, enrolled the new key into the system, and tested both keys -- remote buttons, ignition start, everything -- before I packed up.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just for the key to arrive. I was done at his car in about 30 to 40 minutes. He paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted and didn't move the car once.
