Got a call from a guy in Paradise Falls in Thousand Oaks. He had a 2005 MINI Hardtop, the R50, and he was down to one key. The remote buttons had stopped working months ago, so he'd been manually locking and unlocking with the blade every day. He figured the key was dying and wanted a spare made before the whole thing quit on him.
I pulled up and checked his working key first. Popped the housing open on my tailgate and the CR2032 was corroded along one contact. The battery had leaked just enough to leave a green film on the pad. Cleaned it, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and his original key remote came back to life. He just stood there clicking lock and unlock a few times like he was making sure it was real.
Then I got into the actual job. Cut the new LX8F2V blade from his existing key, programmed the PCF7935 transponder through the OBD-II port using the EWS3 protocol, and synced the remote. The whole thing took about 25 minutes. Walked both keys through lock, unlock, trunk, and two clean engine starts.
He said the dealer had quoted him something that made him put it off for a while. This was a fraction of what they wanted, done in his driveway while he ate lunch.
