Got a call from a guy out in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks. His 2018 MINI Hardtop 2 Door was sitting in his office parking lot, and his only smart key had taken a trip through the washing machine the night before. He dried it out, popped a fresh CR2032 in, and it would not do anything. No remote lock, no Comfort Access, and tapping it against the start button gave him "No key detected" on the instrument cluster.
He called the MINI dealer. They told him to tow it in, order a new key from the parts department, wait a few days, then schedule a programming appointment. He was looking at being without the car most of the week.
I pulled up about 20 minutes after his call. Opened the dead fob on his trunk lid so he could see. The board had visible corrosion along two of the battery contact traces. Water got in between the case halves where the chrome trim ring sits, which is a known weak spot on these NBGIDGNG1 housings.
Cut a new emergency HU92 blade on my portable machine, programmed the new smart key through the OBD port to the FEM module, and ran Comfort Access on every door handle plus the trunk button. He stood there watching the whole time, arms folded, like he was grading me.
Thirty minutes, one trip, and he drove home that afternoon. A fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him in time alone.
