2017 MINI Hardtop 2 Door
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and what does it actually do on my 2017 MINI?

The smart key on your 2017 MINI Hardtop 2 Door is doing two separate jobs at once. The fob communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's security system so the car recognizes it and allows the engine to start. Separately, the remote buttons handle lock and unlock functions from a distance. There's also a physical blade folded into the fob body for direct door or cylinder access if the battery dies or the wireless side fails.

Q: I need a replacement key on a weekend or late evening. Can you still come out to Sunset Hills?

Yes. We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, including weekends and most holidays. A 9 PM Sunday call in Sunset Hills is a normal job for us, not an exception. No extra charge for evenings or weekends.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 MINI. Can I just use that, or does it still need to be programmed?

It still needs to be programmed. Buying the fob is just the first step. Until it's registered to your specific vehicle through a diagnostic tool, it's a piece of plastic that does nothing. The car won't recognize it, the buttons won't work, and the key won't allow the engine to start. The good news is that if you already have the fob in hand, we can work with it.

Q: What happens if I've lost all keys to my 2017 MINI Hardtop 2 Door and have nothing left?

All-keys-lost is more involved than a simple spare addition, but it's a job we handle. The process requires clearing the existing key memory in the vehicle's electronic platform and registering fresh keys from scratch. It takes longer than a standard add-a-key job, so plan for more time on site. One thing worth knowing: once we wipe the old key memory, any previously lost fobs can no longer start the car.

2017 MINI Hardtop 2 Door Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman over in Sunset Hills, Thousand Oaks, on a Sunday evening. Her 2017 MINI Hardtop 2 Door was sitting in her driveway and she had been locked out of a working key for most of the afternoon.

She'd already been to a national chain locksmith earlier that week about her fob acting up. They told her to go to the dealer. The dealer wanted her to leave the car, book an appointment, and come back. On a Sunday, none of that was happening.

When I got there, I asked her to walk me through what the fob was doing. It had stopped being recognized by the car entirely. Door handles weren't responding, key-not-detected warning on the dash, and when she tried the manual key blade in the door, it still turned, which told me the mechanical side was intact. The electronics were the problem.

I connected to the vehicle with my diagnostic equipment, pulled up the key management functions, and worked through the programming process on site. New fob, paired and verified, emergency blade confirmed working. Everything done before the sun was fully down.

She mentioned what the dealer quoted her. I'll just say she saved a good chunk and didn't have to leave her car anywhere.
