I got a call from someone in Rancho Conejo, right there in the Thousand Oaks side of the neighborhood, off one of the quieter residential streets. She had a 2009 MINI Hardtop and her remote head key had gone strange on her. Car started fine, but the lock and unlock buttons had gone completely silent. No click from the doors, no blink from the indicators, nothing. She'd already been to the dealer for a quote and left without committing to it.
When I pulled up she handed me the key and said she figured she needed a whole new one. I popped the fob housing open right there on the hood. CR2032 looked okay at a glance but the positive contact tab had that slight upward bow you get when someone's pried the cover with a key instead of a proper tool. Battery was making just enough contact to do nothing useful under any real load.
Reseated the battery, bent the tab back, snapped the housing closed.
She clicked lock. The car beeped. She looked at the key like it had insulted her for the past week.
That was the whole job. Not every call ends in a new key, and that's fine by me. I'd rather show up, figure out what's actually wrong, and be straight about it than sell someone a key they don't need. If it had needed a full replacement and programming, I'd have done that too, right there in her driveway. That's the whole point of mobile service. The dealer route for this car means dropping it off, waiting, and paying for their overhead on top of the actual work. She saved a good chunk just by having someone come out and look at it first.
