It was a July afternoon in Newbury Park, full sun, parking lot asphalt doing what parking lot asphalt does in July. A gentleman -- older, moving a little slow -- had called me after the dealer told him the earliest available appointment was the following day. His 2011 Rogue was sitting right there in the grocery store lot, engine off, frozen food inside, and his Intelligent Key had gone completely dark.
He'd already tried the fob twice in the door handle. Nothing. Tried the backup hold-to-start-button trick, which sometimes rescues a low-battery situation. Nothing. That told me something before I even pulled in.
When I got there he was standing in the shade of the tailgate overhang, patient but clearly working through the math on his frozen items. I got the door open mechanically using the emergency blade, then pulled the fob apart right on the hood where he could watch.
The CR2032 was reading near zero on my meter, but that alone doesn't usually kill the backup start -- there was also visible corrosion on the battery contact, the kind that builds up slowly when a fob lives in a pocket with keys and change for years. The internal contact couldn't complete the circuit even when I seated a fresh cell.
New fob, programmed through the OBD port, tested lock, unlock, and the third button, walked the range, confirmed the start button saw it clean. Then I had him do the last button press himself. He appreciated that part.
His groceries made it. The dealer would have seen him the next morning.
