Near Conejo Community Park in Thousand Oaks, a guy was standing next to his 2011 Nissan Rogue with a cart full of groceries. It was July. He could see the bags through the glass. The frozen stuff had maybe half an hour before it was all wasted.
His Intelligent Key just stopped responding in the lot. No door unlock, no push-button start, nothing. He tried holding the fob against the start button for the backup procedure. Nothing happened there either.
He called the dealer. Earliest appointment was the next day. Then he found my number.
I was about 15 minutes out. Got the door open with the NSN14 Lishi pick, then plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. His CWTWBU729 fob had a completely dead CR2032, which explained the remote side. But the backup start should have still worked by holding the fob to the button. I popped the fob open and found the issue: the internal antenna contact pad had corroded. Green buildup, the kind you see when a battery leaks low and slow over a couple years. That corrosion broke the passive RFID loop the NATS5 system needs for the backup procedure.
I replaced the fob with a new 285E3-EM30D, programmed it through OBD, and tested lock, unlock, panic, push-button start, and remote range from about 30 feet out. Everything responded clean.
From his phone call to engine running was about 38 minutes. He drove home with his groceries still cold. The dealer would have had him waiting until the next morning for a lot more money.
